CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack, near drowning, drug overdose, and sudden cardiac arrest, in which a person’s heart has stopped and breathing has ceased. When the heart stops, lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few short minutes and cause death within 8 to 10 minutes. CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other organs until more definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, nearly half a million Americans die from a cardiac arrest every year and more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital each year.
